What can athletic therapy help with?

You don’t have to be an athlete to see an athletic therapist. Treatment can help with injury prevention and rehabilitation, recurring pain, movement restrictions and returning to activity after an injury or surgery. Common concerns we work with include:

  • low and mid-back pain
  • SI joint and pelvic girdle pain
  • sciatica and hip pain
  • neck and shoulder tension
  • muscle tightness and postural imbalances
  • sports and activity-related injuries
  • diastasis recti and reduced core activation
  • pregnancy-related pain and exercise modifications
  • postpartum rehabilitation
  • preparation for and recovery from surgery

You don’t need to be injured, or an athlete, to benefit from athletic therapy.

Looking beyond the painful area

Sometimes the place that hurts is only part of the problem.

Our athletic therapists looks at how you move as a whole, including old injuries, strength, mobility and movement patterns that may have developed over time.

The aim is to identify what is contributing to the problem, treat what needs attention and then rebuild movement with exercises that make sense for you.

Treatment may include manual therapy, massage and soft-tissue techniques, stretching, cupping, gua sha, taping, scar treatment and corrective exercises.

Athletic therapy during pregnancy and postpartum

Pregnancy and childbirth can change strength, mobility, posture and the way your body manages everyday movement.

Athletic therapy can help with concerns such as pelvic girdle and SI joint pain, sciatica, back or hip pain, muscle tension, diastasis recti, core weakness and returning to exercise.

Support is available during pregnancy for modifying workouts and preparing your body for birth, as well as after vaginal or C-section delivery to gradually rebuild strength and return to the activities that matter to you.

Scar treatment can also be incorporated following a C-section or hysterectomy when appropriate.

When another type of care would be helpful, we can work alongside pelvic floor physiotherapists, osteopaths, massage therapists, acupuncturists, naturopathic doctors and physicians.

FAQs

What’s the difference between athletic therapy and physiotherapy?

There is overlap in musculoskeletal rehabilitation, but the training and scope of each profession are different. Our athletic therapy sessions place a strong emphasis on hands-on treatment, movement assessment, exercise, and returning to activity.

Can athletic therapy help with pelvic floor concerns?

Athletic therapy can work on strength, movement, core function, and pelvic stability that may be connected to pelvic floor concerns. When specialized pelvic floor assessment or treatment is needed, we work alongside or refer to a pelvic floor physiotherapist.

Do you provide hands-on treatment?

Yes. Manual treatment is an important part of our approach and is combined with exercises chosen for your specific needs.

What’s the difference between athletic therapy and massage therapy?

Both may include hands-on treatment. Athletic therapy also includes functional assessment, injury rehabilitation, and exercise prescription, with a focus on improving how you move and function.
