What does a doula do?

A doula provides continuous emotional, physical, and informational support before, during, and after birth. Doulas do not replace healthcare provides, instead they complement medical care and focus on your comfort, confidence, and overall experience.

Choosing the right doula for you is a very personal decision. Feeling a sense of connection, trust, and comfort can play an important role in how supported you feel throughout this experience.

Doula support at every stage of your journey

Each stage of your journey comes with different needs. Your doula adapts their support to meet you where you are, offering guidance, presence, and reassurance along the way.

Fertility Support

A space for emotional support during a time that can feel uncertain or overwhelming. Your doula offers listening, guidance, and steady presence as you navigate trying to conceive or fertility treatments, helping you feel less alone and more grounded.

Birth Support

Support begins during pregnancy with preparation sessions where you can ask questions, explore your preferences, and feel more informed about birth. During labour, your doula provides continuous presence, comfort techniques, and reassurance, helping you stay calm, supported, and confident in your decisions.

Postpartum Support

Ongoing guidance as you adjust to life with your baby. Your doula offers a supportive space to reflect on your birth experience, ask questions, and navigate the early days of parenthood. Support may include emotional reassurance, guidance with newborn care and feeding, and conversations around sleep and your baby’s rhythms, helping you build confidence in your new role.

NEW! Postpartum Relief & Rest Support

In-home support designed to give you time to rest and recover during the fourth trimester, often called the “golden month.” This newly offered service focuses on nurturing both you and your baby in the early weeks. While you rest or take time for yourself, your doula cares for your baby and assists with light household tasks, allowing you to move through this tender period with more ease.

FAQs

What is a doula?

A doula is a trained professional who provides emotional, physical, and informational support during pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period. In Montréal, doulas work alongside medical teams to support families in hospitals, at home, or in birth centres. A doula does not provide medical care, but offers continuous presence, reassurance, comfort measures, and guidance to help families feel informed and supported throughout the perinatal journey.

What is the difference between a midwife and a doula in Quebec?

In Québec, a midwife is a regulated healthcare professional who provides medical care, conducts prenatal checkups, attends births, and delivers babies. A doula is a non-medical support professional who focuses on emotional support, physical comfort, education, and continuity of care. Doulas do not replace midwives or doctors; instead, they complement medical care by supporting the family’s emotional and practical needs.

Are doulas allowed in Montréal hospitals?

Yes. Doulas are allowed in Montréal hospitals as part of the birth support team. Policies can vary slightly by hospital, but doulas are generally welcomed as a non-medical support person. They work collaboratively with doctors, nurses, and midwives to provide emotional support, comfort techniques, and advocacy while respecting hospital protocols.

Can I have a doula if I plan to use an epidural?

Absolutely. Many families choose to work with a doula and use an epidural. Having a doula does not mean planning an unmedicated birth. A doula supports your choices, whether that includes pain medication, an epidural, or medical interventions. Support before and after the epidural, such as emotional reassurance, positioning, partner support, and postpartum care, can be just as valuable.
